Tattoo Aftercare

Derm Shield

When appropriate we use a derm shield clear film to cover your tattoo. A derm shield is a light, waterproof composite film bandage comprised of three layers: EVA film, matte PU film, and glassine. The matte PU film, which is the part of the bandage that remains on and protects the skin after tattooing, allows for optimal breathability and ductility.

Leave in place for 3 to 7 days depending on exultation (your people juice filling the bandage of the tattoo).

Derm Shield Instructions

  • Leave Derm Shield in place for 3-7 days
  • In the first 24 hours, there may be a build up of plasma under the Derm Shield – This is completely normal. If so, remove the bandage and reapply a new clean one. Once you remove our bandage, keep your tattoo clean and start using our aftercare cream as needed.
  • You may experience some redness around the tattoo where Derm Shield was applied to the un-tattooed skin. This is also completely normal and may occur with any type of medical adhesive. If you do develop an adverse reaction on the tattoo, discontinue use immediately.

Derm Shield Removal

  1. Peel up an edge or corner of Derm Shield. If this proves difficult, you can  attach medical tape to the corner of the film to help lift it.
  2. Slowly pull the film off. Do not pull it straight up away from the skin. Instead, pull the film back and across the skin while holding your skin taut.

Standard Aftercare

If the tattoo is in an awkward area and a derm shield cannot be used or if you remove the derm shield early follow these instructions:

  • Remove initial bandage after 2-3 hours with clean hands. Wash your tattoo with Anti-bacterial soap with your bare hands only. Gently pat dry with clean paper towels. Apply a very thin layer of ointment (artist will recommend one) to the entire tattoo.
  • DO NOT USE: Neosporin, Bacitracin, or petroleum jelly as they may clog pores and cause allergic reactions and/or infection.
  • Clean your new tattoo 2 times a day with anti-bacterial soap followed up with fresh ointment for about 5 days.
  • After that use unscented white lotion several times a day for the next 2 weeks.

DO NOT SCRATCH OR PICK AT YOUR TATTOO.

KEEP YOUR TATTOO OUT OF THE SUN.

DO NOT SOAK YOUR TATTOO.

KEEP YOUR TATTOO CLEAN AND IT WILL KEEP YOU HAPPY.

Piercing Aftercare

Timeline

Depending on the piercing and your body, piercings can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months to fully heal. Our piercers will let you know at your appointment what you can expect for your specific piercing. Regardless of the piercing, follow these best practices to ensure the smoothest healing process:

Cleaning

Clean your piercing 1-2 times a day with antibacterial/antimicrobial soap, rinse well to avoid dryness. For oral (mouth) piercings, clean the outside as directed in addition to rinsing with mouthwash after you eat/drink/smoke and abstain from oral activities with your partner during the healing process. It is possible to over clean!

Saline/Bactine

Using sterile saline with warm water on your piercing area can help to remove plasma and build up. Saline soaks help with irritation and reducing bumps.

Bactine is antiseptic and can help at the first sign of infection, it also has lidocaine and can help to alleviate discomfort while the wound is still open.

Normal characteristics

Redness, swelling, tenderness to the touch, and the excretion of blood plasma build up.

Dont's

  • Do not touch/adjust your piercing without washing your hands first.
  • Do not turn/spin your piercing unless cleaning.
  • Leave your piercing(s) alone when not cleaning them! Extra touching can cause irritation and possibly lead to infection.
  • Do not force your piercing to move, this can cause prolonged healing, infection and/or damage healing tissue.
  • Hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol on your healing piercing will burn and cause dryness/irritation.
  • DO NOT WAIT! If you think you are having an issue, contact us as soon as possible. The sooner we know the sooner we can help :)

Infections

If:

  • The area around your piercing is swollen, painful, hot or discolored,
  • There's blood or pus coming out of your piercing
  • You feel hot, shivery or generally unwell

you are probably getting an infection

If this is occurring seek medical attention for antibiotics.

Irritation Bumps

If you have a weird bump on or next to your piercing, most likely it is an irritation bump (NOT a keloid, which are permanent and often confused with irritation bumps). An irritation bump can be caused and dealt with in a few ways:

  • Jewelry is too small - this will cause pressure and irritation, size up to compensate for swelling
  • Jewelry is too long - this can easily get caught/snagged on clothes, hair, etc. Our original jewelry can be long in length for the healing/swelling process, size down once healed to prevent this
  • Poor aftercare - touching/moving it too much will just keep it irritated. Saline soaks once a day can help reduce bump.
  • Type of jewelry - if you are having an allergic reaction to metal it can cause this as well as other issues. Ensure quality of jewelry, or the website your on before purchase can help to avoid this

Switching Out Jewelry

If you are no longer experiencing any pain, swelling, blood plasma build up or secretion, you should be okay to switch our your jewelry. The area should be back to feeling normal or "un-noticeable".

It is best to allow your piercing to heal for the full allotted time specified on your care sheet, before attempting a switch.

If you would like to switch out before the suggested time frame, we are happy to help! There is a small fee that comes with that.

Swimming and Other Activities

Pools/hot tubs and the ocean are fine, just keep an eye on your piercing for added dryness or irritation. also cleaning it when you are done is recommended.

Avoid "dirty" water; lakes, rivers and ponds while healing.

Avoid rough play, oral contact, and other bodily fluids during the healing process.
